Dear Colleague

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 2nd IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment to be held in Paris, July 13-16, 2003. We are extending this invitation on behalf of the International AIDS Society and the National Agency for AIDS Research in France (ANRS).

We plan an international event of the highest scientific standard that will cover all aspects of basic and clinical science in the field of HIV/AIDS. The programme will include plenary presentations, abstract-driven symposia, abstract-driven poster sessions, and open debates on controversial issues. On each day, “forums” will provide a state of- the-art introduction, abstract-driven presentations and multidisciplinary debates on areas of research of cross-cutting interest for clinicians and basic scientists, and of relevance to researchers in both industrialized and developing countries. The programme will be selected by the International Scientific Programme Committee, the composition of which truly reflects the fields of research that will be discussed during the Conference, and the expected participation from all parts of the world.

HIV cannot be beaten nationally, unless we beat it internationally. For this we need the best of science, the greatest commitment, and the stimulating interaction that the Conference will bring. With the support of our sponsors, we are planning for a large programme of scholarships, including travel grants for students and post-doctoral fellows in laboratories worldwide, and comprehensive grants, covering all expenses for the Conference, for young physicians and researchers from the developing world.

The year 2003 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the discovery of HIV-1. Since the earliest days of the epidemic, France and the ANRS have been in the forefront of scientific and medical research in HIV/AIDS. Paris was thus a natural choice to host, after Buenos- Aires in 2001, the 2nd IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment. This Conference will now be held every second year, in the odd years between the International AIDS Conferences.

Please read carefully the information in the website regarding the Conference. Information is given on the deadline for abstracts, which should not interfere with those of other important meetings planned for 2003, and on how and when to apply for scholarships. We look forward to welcoming you in Paris, “la Ville des lumières”, the city of lights, to share the science, and bring hope to a world that, despite significant progress, remains increasingly challenged by the AIDS epidemic.
